A close run in with the cops
Monday, May 31st, 2004I have joked a lot that at some point in my life when I see a cop car driving by me, I will throw everything I am holding up in the air and run in the opposite direction just to see what they do. Lucky I didn’t do it today.
About an hour ago, my wife & I took a short walk to the local Starbucks for some cheap coffee (cheap because we are regulars and they only charge us for one drink). Rather than taking our usual 2-mile walk, we took a short walk around the block.
As we were walking back up to Ventura, we heard (but didn’t see) a truck come to a screeching halt. A little bit further up and we saw the truck sitting in the middle of the road. The driver was standing on the opposite sidewalk shouting to a passing police car, “HE’S OVER THERE! HE JUST RAN AROUND THE CORNER!”
In the blink of an eye, about 5 police cars came blasting from every direction towards the truck and proceeded around the corner the driver was pointing towards; the very corner we needed to go around to get home. As we were approaching the corner, I commented to Theresa, “I gotta see what these guys are chasing.” thinking that they had continued up Ventura.
Nearing the corner, I noticed a few police cars are stopped in the middle of the road, and traffic is at a standstill. Just as I am about to completely turn the corner, 5 policemen come running round the corner GUNS DRAWN shouting at my wife & I “GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE NOW!”
Well, we didn’t have to be told twice. We hustled our unarmed asses across the street towards Mels where the manager was stepping outside to find out what was happening. We stopped, chatted with him for a brief moment & turned around to survey the scene. There were easily 10-12 police cars stopped across 3 lanes Ventura Blvd. They were scouring the PacBell parking lot & the surrounding vicinity. On top of that they were re-routing traffic out of the area.
Well, since they didn’t seem to be concerned with the other side of the street, we crossed over & decided to head home. They now had the road completely blocked off, but seemed to be ok with pedestrian traffic walking by (I guess cars are more important to protect than we, the walking public). Just as we managed to get into our neighborhood (street is more like it), we managed to finally hear over one of the squackboxes that was cranked WAY up, that someone had been robbed at gunpoint.
So that was my Memorial Day excitement.
On a side note, is it me or did anyone else see the new Catwoman movie before when it starred Brandon Lee & was called The Crow?
